Hoy comentando la pelicula que vi ayer, "Bomb It, con Scott tong, un brilllante Disenador grafico, me ha dado mas datos del mundo de los artistas que practican intervenciones urbanas. Entre ellos, Bansky, que practica la critica social y entre otras acciones fue a Palestina a graffitear el muro que Israel esta contruyendo. Otra de sus iniciativas, fue ir a museos y colgar sus obras sin que nadie se diera cuenta. En muchos casos, las obras estuvieron colgadas mas de dos semanas. Genial! Bomb It es un documental sobre el mundo del graffitti tanto en Estados Unidos como en distintas ciudades del mundo, entre ellas Barcelona. Es uno de los documentales que he visto ultimamente que mas me han gustado, os lo recomiendo muy mucho.

Habia que aprovechar, la nieve recien caida y el primer fin de semana con sol. Nos dimos el gusto de hacer una escapada de un dia a Kirkwood, una estacion escondida en el fondo de un valle, a unas 3 horas de San Francisco. Kirkwood no es una estacion facil, requiere de cierta militancia, los remontes son puras antiguedades (da tiempo a leer un libro en cada subida) y para disfrutar plenamente de la estacion hay que hacer de todo menos seguir las pistas trazadas. Ahora bien, si uno se lo toma con calma y decido pasarse el dia entre arboles, fuera pista, la experiencia se convierte en religiosa. Me recuerda un poco a Ordino Arcalis, en mi pais, Andorra, mi estacion favorita, donde una fiel parroquia ibamos cada fin de semana a gozar de sus fuera pista, y todo en familia. Una de las ventajas de los remontadores del pleistoceno es que su lentitud te permite leer los paneles que han puesto en los postes y conocer la historia del lugar. como pone, por Kirwkood pasaban las diligencias de los pioneros, alla en el lejano oeste

No entiendo a los americanos, tan quisquillosos en ciertas cosas y tan "AnchaesCastilla" en otras. Fijaros en el telesilla sin ningun tipo de proteccion

En definitiva, un fantastico dia en la Sierra (asi le llaman los Californianos a esta cordillera, la Sierra Nevada, y todos se refieren a La Sierra, o como pronuncian/mos la Sieora :))

La nieve

En Andorra, los dias que nevaba me pegaba a la ventana y me pasaba las horas contemplando como la nieve caia. Recuerdo que un 24 de diciembre, con el carnet de conducir recien obtenido, cogi el coche y me fui a la montana porque estaba nevando, y resulta que en una curva el coche patino y se quedo encallado en el arcen.tuve suerte y pude sacarlo despues de media hora de patosas maniobras. cuando ibamos a esquiar, los mejores dias eran los que mas nieve caia, menos visibilidad teniamos y menos gente habia a nuestro alrededor.

Mi connexion con la nieve es esencial, es parte de mi. Supongo que por esto el fin de semana que acabo de pasar a orillas de Lake Tahoe, en la estacion de esqui de Heavenly, ha sido uno de esos fines de semana que me costara olvidar, y todo por la nieve, la mucha nieve que compartio conmigo su tiempo y su tempo.

Hace unas semanas un buen amigo me paso un link a Google videos recomendandome que viera un documental. Hoy, he me he sentado en modo sabado en el sofa y he visto las dos horas de Zeitgeist. Zeitgeist es un documental cargado de controversia, dividio en tres partes, la primera defiende que el cristianismo es, al igual que otras religiones, una representacion de los movimientos estelares, es decir es una cuestion de Astronomia y no de metafisica. En la segunda parte retoma la idea de un complot para explicar 9/11, un complot en el que estarian involucrados altos cargos politicos. En la tercera parte, critica la creacion y el rol que tienen los bancos centrales en la estabilidad social y en especial la reserva federal norteamericana.

Creo que tomarse Zeitgeist al pie de la letra seria tan malo como ignorarlo por completo. Por encima de las muchas imprecisiones que contiene, de lo efectista y de lo parcial que es, creo que el valor que tiene es el de recordarnos que todos tenemos una cosa llamada espiritu critico y que debemos practicarlo si queremos mejorar como sociedad.

Os recomiendo que os tomeis el tiempo de ver Zeitgeist y que contenidos a parte, no os olvideis de ejercer vuestro espiritu critico.

Un dia de migraciones

Ayer dormimos en Santa Cruz, a una hora al sur de San Francisco, en la costa, y hoy hemos aprovechado para ir a ver ballenas y mariposas. Parece raro pero resulta que el golfo de Monterey es un lugar privilegiado en cuanto a naturaleza se refiere, lleno de animales marinos y terrestres. Ahora es la epoca de migracion de las ballenas grises, que desciende desde Alaska hasta Baja California en Mejico para dar a luz. Un desplazamiento de unos 4000 kilometros para dar a luz en Mejico y luego vuelta hacia Alaska, estan en Mejico un par de meses, solo lo justo para dar a luz. El porque de tal migracion se encuentra en la temperatura del agua, es demasiado fria en Alaska para que las crias sobrevivan, la capa de grasa de su cuerpo no es suficientemente gruesa. Por este motivo las madres se deben desplazar hasta las calidas aguas del golfo de Baja California y alli dar a luz. Todo esto lo ha explicado la naturalista que hacia de guia a bordo del barco con el que hemos ido a ver los cetaceos. A pesar de que vimos ballenas, la distancia hizo que las vieramos con poco detalles, en cambio las medusas que poblaban el mar al salir de Monterey y los leones marinos is que los pudimos apreciar de cerca.

Por la tarde nos hemos acercado a un bosque donde las mariposas Monarca hacen lo mismo que las ballenas, migrar. En este caso vienen del norte de los Estado Unidos, y pasan el invierno en Monterey por la calor que hace. Lo mas curioso de todo, ademas de ver miles de ellas volando a tu alrededor, es que estas mariposas nunca habian estado aqui antes. Me explico, las mariposas solo viven unos 6 meses y eso hace que las que estaban hoy en el bosque de Monterey volaran hasta el norte de los Estados unidos donde moriran, y sus crias nacidas alli, volveran otra vez a Monterey. Como puede ser que estos bichejos voladores sean capaces de volar cientos de kilometros y llegar cada ano al mismo sitio, un lugar en el que nunca antes habian estado. La naturaleza es una verdadera maravilla y un gran misterio, y hoy he vuelto a casa encantado con estas maravillas, entre mariposas y ballenas.

El 2008, ano que se presenta incierto donde los haya, tendra para nosotros por lo menos un motivo de celebracion, es el centenario del pueblo en el que vivimos, Burlingame. Asi es, a unos 15 minutos al sur de san Francisco, en plena peninsula, esta el pueblo de Burlingame, que cumple sus 100 primeros anos. Esto tiene la desventaja que no puedes ir a hacer el cafe a ningun lugar anterior al siglo XX, pero por otro, tienes un facil acceso a datos del nacimiento del lugar.

Anson Burlingame, que da nombre al pueblo, fue un senador republicano, que defendio la abolicion de la esclavitud y fue luego nombrado ministro para la China, fortaleciendo las relaciones con ese pais. Anso, compro unos 4 kilometros cuadrados en la zona que hoy es la ciudad (el nunca vino, era de la costa este). La ciudad es conocida como la ciudad de los arboles, tiene unos 18000 arboles, todos protegidos por ley, y unos 28000 habitantes

Les Megachurches. Un mon surrealista

Fa un parell de dies, perdut a Houston vaig anar a una "missa" de un telepredicador. Va ser tota una experiencia, la Lakewood Church, es l'esglesia de major creixement dels Estats Units del darrer any i fa uns 3 anys van comprar i reconvertir, l'estadi dels Houston Rockets. Avui es un temple de 16.000 persones. Despres us explico la historia pero aquesta es la foto:

Se'm va ocurrer dir-los que era la primera vegada. em van acompanyar a la primera fila, al costat del ... master de la orden Joel Osteen. La ceremonia va ser espectacualar, un escenari de concert de rock, 15 cantants, musics, llums, imatge, tot un show

La gent entregada, bojament entregada
Els assistents repartint Kleenex a tort i a dret amb tanta plorera
Espais de joc pels nens mentres els pares van a la cerimonia

El resultat, l'esglesia de major creixement dels Estats Units, s'han autodenominat Cristians No Denominational (es a dir sense afiliacio), un discurs hiper-senzill pero sempre molt moderat i centrat en l'acompliment i no en la critica (no critica per exemple l'homosexualitat).

Ningu em va intentar convencer, ningu em va fotre un rollo, i jo vaig marxar entenent millor perque aquests Telepredicadors, tenen el poder que tenen.

Este fin de semana nos apuntamos a un encuentro de cazadores de setas. La cosecha fue barbara, de todo y cantidad para unos primerizos en la materia aqui en
California.

Quien me iba a decir que despues de tan fructifera jornada, me comeria una ensalada de unas amanitas muscarias y me quedaria tan ancho. Estas setas estan consideradas toxicas, pero segun David Arora es un tema de cocina. O sea que la innovacion no esta en el producto sino en el proceso. A Nicole y a mi nos toco limpiarlos, y no veas como me lave las manos despues de hacerlo. Por la noche al acostarme, me autoanalizaba clinicamente cada minimo oido de mi estomago mietras me decia, ya veras que tendras que correr al hospital, tu y los otros 89 que se zamparon las amanitas. Resultado, estoy tan campante, y la ensalada de Amanitas Muscarias una exquisitez, quien me lo iba a decir. A pesar de tan grata experiencia no espereis que lo repita en casa, es un plato de expertos.

Para compensar tal subidon culinario ayer cocinamos y nos zampamos una tortilla de Ceps (de la variedad boletus aereus, y tan aereos que eram) y Rossinyols (cantherellus)que estaba de muerte. Lo que me faltaba para estar como en casa, descubrir que esta tierra esta plagada de setas. Tremedo oiga!!!!

No exactamente, es que es Thanksgiving, y todo el mundo esta cocinando el tradicional mamut con detodo que la gente come para Thanksgiving. Para los que no sepais nada de esta celebracion (como yo) aqui van algunos datos:

Se commemora la primera cosecha que los pioneros obtuvieron alla por el 1619, se da las gracias a dios por los frutos obtenidos. Los echos miticos fueron dos episodios de accion de gracias en Berkeley Hundred, Virginia en 1619 y el de unos pelegrinos en Plymouth, Massachussets en 1621

El gobierno abre parte del espacio aereo reservado para temas militares y de seguridad para intentar reducir el caos aereo que se produce estos dias, con retrasos a la altura del pais.

Mas famoso si cabe que el Thanksgiving Day, siempre el ultimo jueves de noviembre, es el Blackfriday, o sea manana. es el unico puente que tiene los americanos y a que lo dedican, pues al shopping. Blackfriday son las mayores rebajas del ano, algunas tiendas abren a las 5 de la manana, y son ya famosos los Doorbusters, o sea la cantidad de personas que se amontonan en las puertas a la hora de la apertura. Anexo: el lunes proximo, algunas de las rebajas aun estan vigentes pero solo online, esto a dado origen al que ya se conoce como el Cybermonday, no esta mal esto de los conceptos y las rebajas. Para que veais un ejemplo de que implica, os recomiendo esta promo online que realiza Target, unos grandes almacenes de creciente popularidad, es un 2-Day race to Sales. Perded un poco el tiempo con el, es muy bueno:

Conclusion: esto es como Santa Claus y el ya famoso echo que la barba balnca y el vestido rojo son idea de Coca-Cola, aqui mucho de lo que forma el imaginario colectivo tiene un origen mercantil

Y por ultimo, como no, lo que faltaba, algo del comer. Al lado del tradicional pavo, que este ano estara repleto de organics, no fat, local, y seguro que a alguno de los pavos hasta lo abran escolarizado, podemos encontrar el Turducken. El Turducken, es un Turkey (pavo) rellenos de un Duck(Pato), que a su vez esta relleno de un chicken (pollo). El Turducken es de creciente popularidad especialmente en los estados del sur (para tranquilidad vuestra y mia propia tengo que deciros que el Turducken, viene con el pato y el pollo deshuesados)

Y mientras yo pues trabajando, que asi acumulo dias para Navidad en Andorra, he pensado en llevarme un Turducken pero creo que no pasara el control de seguridad del aeropuerto y si lo hace, seguro que se lo quedan en cuarentena en Barcelona.

Momento de promocion del otro blog en el que estoy metido :), exploracion.wordpress.com. La idea de exploracion (por cierto no me gusta el nombre, se lo puse porque mi imaginacion esta exprimida, aceptamos sugerencias) dira alrededor de la innovacion en los negocios, y esta destinado a los hispano hablantes (no como este blog, que sufre de esquizofrenia idiomatica).

Un post que me parecio muy interesante fue el de Nicole(las 5 C's reconsideradas), en el que hablaba de las grandes metas a las que aspiran los jovenes de hoy. su post venia a raiz de una charla que tuvimos con unos amigos Aisatico-americanos en la que nos dijeron que en Singapore, el exito se mide en base a cuantas C's se consiguen(las 5 C's):

Estos cinco logros, ganar dinero substancialmente, ser propietario de una casa, tener un coche, llegar muy arriba profesionalmente y pertenecer a algun Club (se entiende Club social, es decir un Rotari para que nos entendamos, no Club deportivo) es lo marca el exito en esa sociedad.

A raiz de eso, Nicole se planteo encontrar las C's de California, y este es el resultado:

Community - ser parte de un grupo para reforzar el concepto de individuo, ser socio de asocaciones, networks, Web 2.0,…
Carpool - ser verde y sostenible, llegar a la oficina en carpool, conducir un Prius, ser socio de Zipcar, tomar transíto público, …
Creation - ser emprendedor, ser su propio jefe, el intento de crear un valor distinto y propio, tomar el destino profesional en sus propias manos
Cause- tener un sentido que trasciende al interes individual en todo aquello que haces

Dias de niebla

California tiene una costa escandalosamente bella (si obviamos la parte de LA). Una de sus rasgos mas bellos e intrigantes es la niebla, casi ompnipresente a lo largo del ano. Esto es lo hemos visto hoy en Santa Cruz:

O aqui, en el Mount Tam la semana, con toda la bahia de San Francisco a sus pies y la niebla al fondo, en el horizonte del Pacifico:

La niebla es una metafora de muchos momentos dificiles de nuestra vida, dificiles, desorientadores, por donde es dificil transitar, pero a la vez de una trascendente belleza cuando los contemplamos desde la distancia de lo que hemos vivido.

Ayer en San Francisco se clausuro una muestra de cine italiano, nos quedamos con una pelicula de un director novel, Alessandro Angelini, l'Aria Salata. Os la recomiendo, es una pelicula de niebla, preciosa y dificil, fria y suave, no os la perdais. Buena semana

At FastCompany this month you can find an interesting article about fuel efficiency that shows once more that increase fuel efficiency is not a technology issue. The technology is out there and great individuals like Johnathan Goodwin and his company SAE energy are doing great stuff. His recipe to change the paradigm and dramatically reduce fuel consumption in the US is based on three steps:

1. More Diesel engines. Pound per pound, more power, 40% better mileage and 20% less emissions. just this switch could improve 40% nations mileage as well as become a platform for all the Biodiesel industry with almost zero technological innovation

2. Start produce Diesel-electric hybrid cars. As the Fast company article points our, this would double the mileage even on the bigger cars.

3. Move on and get into the the "dual fuel" mode. this is combine a electric engine with two other fuels, one would still be Biodiesel, the other could be hydrogen, ethanol, natural gas, etc.

That's where SAE Energy is already and the reason why they are able to get 60 miles per gallon out of a Hummer H3.

Once more we are facing an Economical problem here, an oligopolistic market that impedes or at least slows down the new available solutions to get to the market. It is not about technology it is about economy.

If you are an individual does this frame reflect your behavior? And if you are a business, where do your products fit?

Given the fact that all the products are owned in this frame, I believe that long term customer loyalty happens just in those products that make it to the end, this is that people not just own, but do consider to us, carry around and end up effectively using.

If you detect your product makes it to the second stage, this is people own it and may consider using it but end up not doing it you should start asking questions such as, what's the missing attribute in my product, is it about emotions? is it about functions? If you are a step further, this is your product is carried then maybe there aren't any function missing and all the emotional component is there but your product probably suffers from a mediocre interface, work on that.

If we take this frame as individuals, we better start rethinking our priorities in life, it seems that most part of us are living a huge owned life, with lots of stuff, that we never end-up using, and this is sad, really sad. Maybe we should start consider our lives from a use perspective and not from an ownership position. Are you ready to become a User and forget about being an Owner?? Think about it

Kevin Kelly, fundador y guru de la revista Wired, escribio un famoso articulo en el 2005, We are the Web, que definia el fenomeno de la Web 2.0. Para los que no lo hayais leido os lo recomiendo. Una de sus secuelas la podeis encontrar en este video, The Machine is Us, un ejercicio de comunicacion, una gozada, son 4 minutos. Esta hecho por Michael Wesch, experto en antropologia cultural. En Youtube tiene un canal al que uno se puede suscribir.

Think about it. To achieve tha target price (100$ one laptop) they have to sell 3 milion units. To do this they've come up with an initiative, buy a laptop at 399$ and donate a second one with no extra charge. Or simply, you don't need a laptop, so donate 200$ and a kid will get a laptop. True devloping countries need food, health system, etc. but they do need access to knowledge or else they will never be self-suficient. Craigslist is one of the internet totems. It is a non-profit website and it curently ranks 10th on the most visited websites in the United States. It is all about uders offering products, services, activities, real state, job offers, etc. to other users. Among all the information Craiglist contains the for sure have to be some hidden pearls of weird offerings. That's why they've created the Best of Craigslist. Sometimes I have the sensation that people have lots of spare time, but in other ocasions I simply believe everybody is just a great creative mind if it has enough time and an appropiate context. Survival Of The Fittest

Whenever I get a package of plain M&Ms, I make it my duty to continue the strength and robustness of the candy as a species. To this end, I hold M&M duels.

Taking two candies between my thumb and forefinger, I apply pressure, squeezing them together until one of them cracks and splinters. That is the "loser," and I eat the inferior one immediately. The winner gets to go another round.

I have found that, in general, the brown and red M&Ms are tougher, and the newer blue ones are genetically inferior. I have hypothesized that the blue M&Ms as a race cannot survive long in the intense theater of competition that is the modern candy and snack-food world.

Occasionally I will get a mutation, a candy that is misshapen, or pointier, or flatter than the rest. Almost invariably this proves to be a weakness, but on very rare occasions it gives the candy extra strength. In this way, the species continues to adapt to its environment.

When I reach the end of the pack, I am left with one M&M, the strongest of the herd. Since it would make no sense to eat this one as well, I pack it neatly in an envelope and send it to M&M Mars, A Division of Mars, Inc., Hackettstown, NJ 17840-1503 U.S.A., along with a 3x5 card reading, "Please use this M&M for breeding purposes."

This week they wrote back to thank me, and sent me a coupon for a free 1/2 pound bag of plain M&Ms. I consider this "grant money." I have set aside the weekend for a grand tournament. From a field of hundreds, we will discover the True Champion.

Estuve en la Wired Next Fest celebrada en LA el fin de semana pasado. Mas posts seguiran a este sobre el mismo tema pero para empezar, los protagonistas de la fiesta fueron los robots. y dentro de los robots me sorprendio el hecho que se estan concentrando en la Articificial Emotion y no tanto como hasta ahora en la Artificial Motion.

todo gira alrededor de representar los sentimietos, expresiones humanas. Lo curioso del caso es que me parecieron mucho mas interesantes aquellos robots mas iconicos, coneptuales que no los que pretendian ser realistas. He aqui unos ejemplos.

Artificial Emotions Realistas

En este caso el robot captaba la posicion del usurio y su cara emitia sonrisas. Como podeis apreciar el resto del robot no ayudaba a hacerlo creible, habia que concentrarse solo en la cara.

En este otro creador y creado se fundian en uno solo invitando al espectador a decidir quien era quien. A mi personalmente me parecio que estaba en un museo de cera puesto que el robot no movio ni un pelo y eso hizo. O sea que el componente de motion senzillamente desaparecio.

El colega que invento los cajeros automáticos es un escocés, John Shepherd-Barron, el primero lo instalaron en una sucursal de Barclays en Enfield, que esta en algun lugar de Inglaterra (Google maps me ilumina, Enfield esta en los suburbios de Londres, al norte). John Sheperd-Barron en su afán por desarrollar la maquina había decidido darle un código de seguridad de 6 cifras, le parecidos prácticamente indescifrable. Al llegar a casa por la noche se sentó a cenar con su mujer y le contó como había avanzado su proyecto ese día. Al llegar al tema de los 6 dígitos, su mujer le paro y le dijo que no funcionaria, que ella era incapaz de recordar cifras de mas de 4 dígitos y le dio varios ejemplos de como eso aplicaba a su vida. John Shepherd-Barron, como buen marido, escucho atentamente el insight que le dio su mujer y decidió cambiar el código secreto de los cajeros y ponerle 4 cifras.

La próxima vez que vayáis a un cajero, pongáis la tarjeta y os pida el código secreto, pensad en Ms. Sheperd-Barron, que una noche en medio de la campiña escocesa decidió que todo el sistema de tarjetas de crédito mundial, visa, mastercards, diners, amex, etc. iban a tener 4 dígitos en sus códigos secretos...

Labeled honesty and brand lazyness

I buy organic products, I believe they are healthy and respectful, that's good. On the other side when observing the wide and fast spread of the words organix and simlar, I have the feeling that brands have a total lack of honesty and respect and that's why they need to label themselves as honest.

Last week when visiting a vineyard in Napa valley, the Niebaum Coppola, the guy told us that their wines had been organic since Francis ford Coppola took over the company in the late 70's. the thing is they have never labeled any of their wines organic. They are simply what they are, a honest product, respectful that has never played with the consumer's respect.

Once again we have to encourage people to go beyond the brand and get to know what's behind. More and more the brand awareness has been an excuse for consumer laziness. The future is about the opposite, is about consumer awareness that would bring the brand to a sort of brand laziness state, where no more labeling will be required

Les identit@ts i la innovació

• El sociòleg Manuel Castells defineix la identitat de projecte que caracteritza una determinada societat com aquella en què els actors socials, a partir del material cultural de què disposen, construeixen una nova societat i cerquen la constant transformació de tota l’estructura social. En contrast a la identitat de projecte, Castells ofereix dues alternatives, la identitat legitimadora, aquella imposada per institucions hegemòniques, i la identitat de resistència, aquella generada com a reacció a una amenaça excloent. Aquests tres conceptes es barregen en les diferents identitats de les nostres societats; malgrat això, cada societat té una certa tendència cap a alguna de les tres opcions. Així, per exemple, hom podria pensar que la identitat de Catalunya ha estat i és una identitat de resistència, i la identitat nord-americana darrerament té un fort component d’identitat legitimadora.
Tenint presents aquests conceptes, centrem-nos en un cas identitari concret i poc conegut, la badia de San Francisco, o The Bay Area, com la coneixen els autòctons.
Una de les instantànies més conegudes és el pont vermell de San Francisco, el Golden Gate. El Golden Gate dóna entrada a una àrea geogràfica força peculiar, una gran badia de més de 200 quilòmetres de costa. Malgrat que tots tenim una idea d’allò que és la ciutat de San Francisco, i segurament en podríem anomenar atributs clau (com liberal, per exemple), poca gent se sent familiaritzada amb el concepte de la Bay Area. El fet curiós és que quan als habitants de la ciutat els demanes d’on són, solen respondre: “I’m from the Bay Area” (“sóc de l’àrea de la badia”) i no pas “sóc de San Francisco”. Què hi ha, doncs, darrere d’aquest concepte identitari de la Bay Area. Fem-ne un recorregut geogràfic.
A vol de colom, a l’oest de la badia hi trobem la Universitat d’Stanford, que si fos un país seria el cinquè país del món en nombre de premis Nobel. Tot just al sud, trobem Silicon Valley, amb la seu de pràcticament totes les companyies que han revolucionat la nostra societat a través d’Internet. A l’est, la Universitat de Berkeley, que si fos un país seria el setè del món en premis Nobel (si sumem Stanford i Berkeley, serien el quart país del món, darrere dels Estats Units, el Regne Unit i Alemanya). Tancant el triangle, a l’oest de la badia descobrim la ciutat de San Francisco, centre neuràlgic de nombroses companyies del món de la comunicació i la publicitat, com Industrial Light and Magic, de George Lucas, per exemple. La historia de la badia és plena d’onades migratòries, tant des del costat asiàtic com des d’Europa, d’episodis disruptius de canvi, com el terratrèmol del 1906, la febre de l’or o la descoberta del microprocessador i de l’ús de materials semiconductors com el silici. Avui, la badia de San Francisco és el principal pol de coneixement aplicat d’àmbit mundial, i després de tot el boom del món dels ordinadors i Internet estan reenfocant els seus esforços cap a la següent etapa que marcarà la societat, el desenvolupament d’energies netes, productes sostenibles i mitjans de producció respectuosos amb el medi ambient. En definitiva, la clau per entendre la identitat de la Bay Area és entendre que és una identitat de projecte on la constant és la innovació.
Un dels economistes més influents del segle XX, Joseph Schumpeter, va centrar els seus esforços en la figura dels emprenedors, de la creació de noves idees i de la destrucció creativa que aquestes noves idees generaven de manera natural en la societat. Per a Schumpeter, així com per a Castells, les societats de futur construeixen la seva identitat a partir de projectes i no tant de tradicions, i entenen que el canvi és la constant i que, per tant, cal gestionar-lo per generar el màxim d’oportunitats i no pas oposar-hi resistència ancorant-se en l’estatus actual.
Des que sóc a la Bay Area, em pregunto quina és la identitat que marca en aquests moments la societat andorrana, i si, com voldria creure, els ciutadans d’Andorra compartim una identitat de projecte. Llavors em pregunto quines són les idees que tots compartim, quins són els canvis que gestionem i si tots plegats som conscients i acceptem allò que cal deixar enrere.

Ja n'havia parlat, pero insisteixo. Aqui als US, s'estan aixecant moltes protestes per a que la gent deixi de comprar aigua. http://www.stopcorporateabuse.org/cms/page1353.cfm, ha iniciat una campanya "Think outside the bottle" a tota la nacio, a Nova York s'han gastat 1 milio $ per a promocionar aigua de l'aixeta, a San Francisco, l'alcalde ha prohibit als funcionaris que comprin ampolles d'aigua, dels de Salt Lake City no serveixen inclus un dels restaurants mes cars de NY, Del Posto, ha tret les ampolles d'aigua del menu. Es promou doncs l'aigua de l'aixeta i es penalitza el transport d'ampolles d'aigua amb les emisions que comporta, l'us de plastic i es promou la redireccio de recursos cap a paisos que ho necessiten, entre altres. Es dona el cas que esta de moda una aigua que ve de Fiji, un pais on 80% de la poblacio no te aigua corrent, sense tenir en compte l'impacte ambiental d'enviar ampolles cap a Fiji, omplir-les i despres enviar-les cap a USA. Joybubbles died... well not so sure

I had no idea who Joybubbles was until I heard about his death last 8th of August, he was 58. As soon as I red about Joybubbles (whose birth name was Joe Engressia, until 1991, when he became Joybubbles) I once again realised how resilient human beings are. Here's some hints about Joybubbles:

He was blind from birth, suffered abuses at school and at home due to the pressure placed on him by his mother

He was a crazy genius, IQ around 170.

Made himself arrested twice in order to get visibility in the phone industry

Had many different jobs (he had a prodigious smell and worked for the Agricultural faculty of Mineapolis to investigate how to control the odor of hog excrement)

Created his own church: Church of Eternal Childhood

He was one of the first hackers, in the 70's enjoyed having free phone calls by whistling the tones, it was the tone-based age (BY WHISTLING!!! do you realise this. He was 5 y.o. when he first disconnected a phone). By then hackers named themselves Phreacks and Joybubbles was the icon. Guess who followed him, Steve Wozniack and Steve Jobs, the Apple guys

Think about it, he was extreme, for sure, but he really lived his live, from begging to the end

World values

World Values Survey

The World Values Survey consists of an organisation formed by sociologists from more than 80 universities world wide. Their tasks constists on studying the values, beliefs, the habits of the different countries, societes and cultures that form the planet. Go to their website, is highly recommende. Among other studies, you can find the Inglehart-Welzel Cutural Map of the World. It is really interesting to see how the different countries and cultures correlate with the variables.

The first interesting conclusion is that there's two variables, that explain the major differences among the different societies. Variable one, Traditional/Secular-rational values, reflects the contrast between societies in which religion is very important and those in which it is not. Variable two, the transition from industrial society to post-industrial societies-which brings a polarization between Survival and Self-expression values.

Very interesting to see where countries such as the US are, close to the traditional religios than to the secular/rational one.

Anyway, this is all based on a survey, so some of you may think potentially there's plenty of mistakes. In any case, I believe is a good exercise and detinitely food for though.

... and you have to wait for a long time meanwhile a family member is having surgery, you may appreciate to have somebody right there that can constantly update you on how is his or her status. Actually she even know where you are sitting in the waiting area and she passes by often to update you with news and offer you coffee, tea, candys, etc. and you even have interesting readings about issues that matter when you are facing hard times...

... after the surgery in case you have to stay in the hospital overnight, here are some nice details. You get a whiteboard where the nurses writte down their names, you know who is taking care of you at any moment....

... you can get a nice massage in your room...

... and you have classical music being played in the hall while a person playing harp passing by the different patient corridors...

Uno de los librios mas leidos tanto del ano pasado como de este en lo Estados Unidos es The Omnivore's Dilema, escrito por Michael Polan, Professor de periodismo de la Universidad de Berkeley. Es un libro sobre los alimentos y como nos alimentamos, un bombazo de libro, os lo recomiendo.

La cadena de supermercados de alimentacion de mayor crecimiento del pais es Wholefoods. Wholefoods se posiciona como ecologico, orgnaico, sostenible, comercio justo, etc. y la verdad es que a pesar de que son caros, son realmente un ejemplo de grandes productos, gran empresa y asi y todo, una organizacion justa y con conciencia.

A pesar de esto, en su libro, The Omnivore's Dilema, Polan criticaba fuertemente a Wholefoods. Esto provoco una reaccion por parte del CEO de Wholefoods, John Mackey, un tejanoe de Austin, uno de esos emprendedores que tienen poco de CEO y mucho de visionario. Mackay invito a Polan a reunirse con el y desde entonces empezaron una constructiva conversacion a traves de emails y blogs. todo esto ha llevado a Wholefoods, que ya de por si era la cadena de alimentacion mas ecologica y con conciencia del pais, ha replantearse parte de su estrategia e iniciar iniciativas muy interesante.

Estos dos interesantisimos personajes, despues del intercambio de emails y blogs, ofrecieron una interesante charla en la universidad de Berkeley. Es un documento largo, pero vale muchisimo la pena, toda una declaracion de intenciones de hacia donde va la industria alimentaria y en especial el papel que puede jugar en nuestra sociedad un actor tant importante como la distribucion. In San Francisco for instance the water comes straight from Yosemite national park and it's so good that they do not even have to filter it. So except if you are from New York or Barcelona, DRINK TAP WATER!!!

Fiji Water is after Evian, the second best selling upscale water in the United States. It is real Fijian water bottled in the Fiji Islands and shipped to the US. For each liter of Fiji water, The total amount of water used to produce and deliver one bottle of imported water is 6.74kg. And the amount of GHGs (Green House Gases) released amount to 250g, or 0.25kg, or 0.00025 tons (imagine, they have to ship the bottles from China to Fiji and then the water bottles from Fiji to US). On top of that , access to drinking water in Fiji is around 43%. So please, DRINK TAP WATER !!!!!!!!!

Pepsico and Coca Cole have their respective water brands Aquafina and Dasani. Both belong to the Purified type of water. This means municipal water, also known as tap water that is bottled. They do some chemical treatment that they then sell as purification. It sounds as if they where blessing the water. Well, what they are really doing is simply unifying taste among. This means, there are Aquafina bottling plants all over the US, and Europe, using the municipal waters of different cities. If they did nothing all this perfectly healthy waters would taste different because they come from different cities, so no brand consistency. That's why they have to purify the water, to make Aquafina or Dasani taste the same no matter where you are. So please DRINK TAP WATER !!!!!!!!

Despues del episodio que os conte hace unos dias de la prohibicion del uso de internet por parte de los politicos en periodos electorales en Japon he aqui un par de ejemplos mas de como internet esta afectando a la politica.

Taiwan

En el parlamento de Taiwan los politicos suelen terminar a mamporros. Pues bien, parece que en Taiwan la politica es extremadamente emocional. Cuando el candidato del partido Kuomintang (en plan simple el partico pro un acercamiento a China), un tal Ma Ying-jeou va a los pueblos y bebe un vaso de algo, come en un plato, o se suena los mocos, por poner tres ejemplos, automaticamente subastan en eBay todo lo que ha tocado. Os imaginais en Espana una subasta en eBay del "flequillo "de Anasagasti"

USA

Mientras en USA los de Google han inaugurado un canal en Youtube al servicio de las eleccions presidenciales 2008.

Los candidatos cualgan videos, los internautas cuelgan preguntas, comentarios, etc. Problema, pues que nos es libre. Cada video que un internauta cuelga referido a un candidato debe ser aprobado previamente por el equipo de campana del candidato en cuestion.

Aqui tenemos uno del Partido Republicano dando la vara con un video de un minuto que no interesa absolutamente a nadie. (como debe ser, por algo es politico:))

Por alguna razon que se me escapa, mi navegador Firefox desde hace una semana funciona cuando le da la real gana. Dada mi actual internetdependencia he decidido serle infiel y como paso del Explorer y creo que el Safari es para snobs, he estado probando buscadores. Lo mejorcito para mi:
Flock - muy bueno si teneis blogs, te permite postear texto, imagenes, etc. en cualquiera de tus blogs de una manera rapida y sencilla. Es un Firefox pero muy pensado para la web 2.0, o sea expresarte y compartir con los amiguetes Opera - muy bueno si teneis poco tiempo y quereis ir al rapido, senzillo, muy rapido y con funciones tipo marcacion rapida muy interesantes

De todas maneras espero que por algun vinculo desconodico con el mundo virtual mi Firefox vuelva a funcionar en el corto plazo, es sin duda el mejor.

En los USA el ultimo debate entre los aspirantes a candidato a la presidencia del pais por parte de los democratas ha sido organizado conjuntamente por CNN y Youtube. Los internautas postearon sus preguntas en Youtube y durante el debate en CNN fueron planteadas a los candidatos. Youtube no anade mucho valor al debate, puesto que CNN seleccionaba las preguntas, pero bueno algo es algo. Ademas de este debate, youtube esta lleno de videos de los candidatos marcando claramente el hecho de que internet esta plenamente integrado en la vida politica norteamericana. De la misma manera por cierto en youtube, los internautas han colgado todos los videos de los canditatos en situaciones politica y presidencialmente poco correctas. Ejemplo, estas imagenes del republicano Giuliani disfrazado de mujer, que ya ves tu, pero en este pais eso es como pecado capital:

En las recientes eleccions parlamentarias en Japon el uso de internet por parte de los partidos, email incluydo ha sido PROHIBIDO. Aunque parezca surrealista asi es, el medio mas democratico que tenemos es excluido del ejercicio mas democratico, unas elecciones. La razon, pues aparentemente en Japon estan prohibidos la distribucion de panfletos de propaganda durante la campana y internet se considera una variante de esto y por lo tanto ha sido prohibido. Lo curioso del caso es que he escuchado a estudiantes de ciencias politicas de una universidad de Tokio y estaban de acuerdo. Segun ellos internet no es "oficial" y es "poco serio". Soy yo o tot plegat me parece un poco surrealista.

Uno de los pilares de los movimientos pacifistas y proderechos humanos de los anos 60 surgio en la Universidad de Berkeley alrededor del Free Speech Mouvement. Entre otras cosas, lucharon por el derecho de voto para los afroamericanos y otras causas vinculadas a los derechos civiles, entre ellas la abolicion de la obligacion de las facultades de declarar su tendencia politica (si, es asi, en los 60's las facultades norteamericanas tenian que declarar si eran de orientacion democrata o republicana, ademas del hecho que no podian ser apoliticas, tampoco podian optar por otras opciones, a que nadie lo hubiera dicho de los USA).

Pues bien, aunque anecdotico, el otro dia en la terminal de vuelas nacionales de San Francisco descubri esto:

Ayer por la tarde decidimos acercarnos hasta la universidad de Stanford atraidos por una convocatario sobre una charla titulada Ecoimagination. Personalmente no habia leido quien era el postulante, pero me imagine que podia encontrarme a un raro especimen de estos que rondan por Sillicon Valley mezcla de activista de Greenpeace y de ejecutivo de agencia de publicidad. Cual fue la sorpresa al llegar a la sala y encontrarmela hasta los topes, tuvimos que sentarnos en el pasillo. La charla ya habia empezado y pronto me di cuenta que el postulante debia ser alguien importante (esencialmente porque era un discurso del tipo politico, es decir, con poca miga). Era Jeffrey Immelt CEO de General Electric, para los del mundo de los negocios, el sucesor del mitico jack Welch (para los ignorantes como yo, este senor es basicamente dios). Entre nosotros me hubiera gustado mas el Greenpeace, el discurso de Mr Immelt tuvo poco de Eco-, entre otras cosas vino a decir que a el mientras haya negocio sera eco, y si luego de eco hay que hacerse del Betis para seguir haciendo negocio pues que tambien. Y en lo que a Imagination ser refiere pues que le vamos a hacer mucha mucha tampoco. En resumen una conferencia absolutamente mitomana y profundamente decepcionante. Que hi farem...

Un par de noticias que llegan con un cierto retraso a mi mundo (concretamente la primera unos 10 meses, pero es que soy lento). Por si hay alguien peor que yo aqui estan:

1. El futuro micropocesador de AMD, el primer competidor que le hace un poco de sombra a Intel, tiene el nombre en codigo de Barcelona.

(recomendacio, empieza a ver el video de Jeff Han y cuando llegue a la parte de las fotos arranca el de Microsoft, la comparacion es divertida)

Doncs que els inversors de Wall Street creien que se n'havien venut 700.000, PERO resulta que l'operador de telefonia que te l'exclusiva del iPhone, AT&T, va publicar que havia fet nomes 146.000 activacions. Aixo es molt per un mobil qualsevol, es poc per l'iPhone, resultat 6% a borsa. PERO, al dia seguent, Apple va publicar que ells havien enviat uns 226.000 iPhones a les botigues, es a dir que se n'havien venut el 65%, que esta forca be, i el millor de tot, les ventes d'ordinadors van pujar un 30% durant el cap de setmana. At the Hollywood Bowl in LA every time they host a concert they have some nice initiatives to collect money for fair initiatives. Last weekend they were collecting money for young musicians, for every signature a person did in some big white boards spread all over the theater a financial institution was going to donate one dollar. In exchange for your signature they gave everybody a little pin shaped as an instrument with blinking lights on it

Here is the point. Inside each pin you can find two button cell batteries. Yes you are right, these batteries that are highly pollutant . Do you imagine how many people will not be aware of this little detail, and therefore will through the pin into the garbage?

I have already sent an email to the Hollywood Bowl to let them know about, what seems to me, a huge mistake. Learning, it seems that there is still lots of work to do to change peoples mind and get everybody always aware of what taking care of the environment means. What worries me is that even charitable actions (you would assume they are sensitive to these issues) also have a long way to go.

You think you speak a foreign language until you go to the country of that specific language and you get to order a coffee in a bar. Usually then you realize you know nothing about English, for instance, and you fall in a deep depression.

I've gone through this tough moment a several times and in order to overcome the frustation that goes with I've done a long research and came out with some findings that I share with you. i hope they'll help you.

You are staring at the bartender and you think for yourself: "I don't undersand them because of their accent, I've learned English from South England and these guys are American, Australian, Scottish, or whatever". WRONG!!!!!

Here's my theory, it is not a language/pronunciation problem, it is a RITUAL problem. You usually understand everything the bartender tells you until you hit a point that differs from the same situation you would have in your country. Example, in Spain a Bartender never asks you if you want your coffee to stay or to go, and that's the point where you dont' understand him!!!

You are used to your daily rituals, and in Spain having your coffee implies A+B+D, you unconsciously know this. But when you go somewhere else, maybe the coffee ritual has an extra step A+B+C+D. Lesson open your mind an be aware of the To Stay or To Go Effect, that's probably the missing link that's causing the misunderstanding.

Happily I've solved my language depressions and now I have to deal with the "I'm too much in my paradign, and not open enough to new stimulus" depression. It's a never ending story!!

The technology turns each vehicle into a potential energy storage system, increasing power reliability and the amount of renewable energy available to the grid during peak power usage. Google has signed an agreement with PG& E, www.pge.com (Pacific Gas and Electric Company), a pioneer in developing the technogly that enables cars to become energy suppliers for homes, businesses ets.
